History: NC 183 appeared about 1930 as new primary routing, running from NC 105 (now SR 1238) near Linville Falls east to NC 181 near Jonas Ridge.
In 1954, NC 183 west was extended to US 221, replacing a bit of NC 105.

Comment: NC 183 is parallel and right next to the Blue Ridge Pkwy for its eastern third. There are a few connections to the BRP possible from NC 183 which are not subject to winter closures - I accessed the parkway this way in 1987 doing this.
Parking areas on each side of Linville Gorge are available on NC 183.
