N.C. 708  dead
Formerly:

NC 708: was born by 1922. It began at its parent NC 70 (the future US 29) in Reidsville. It ran west to Wentworth before ending at NC 897 (curr US 220 Bus-US 311 jct) Madison.
In 1923, NC 708 east was truncated to Bakers Crossroads, as NC 65 was rerouted on a northerly track between Winston Salem and Reidsville which replaced that piece of NC 708.
NC 708 was killed in 1935 when today's NC 704 was rerouted as an E-W route over it.

NC 708 replaced by NC 704

The original route of NC 708 between Madison and Wentworth was straightened out around the time NC 704 took over. Thus, NC 708 may not have used much of modern 704 (anyone have a '34 Official?). The original route used: US 220 Bus from Madison east; Arlene Loop, then Bald Hill Loop Rd through Intelligence; Planters Rd and Danbury Bridge Rd to Pleasantville; a small piece of today's 704; Bakers Cross Rd over to NC 65.
The 1930 Rockingham County map that confirms this original 708 routing erroneously calls this NC 709.
