History: |
NC 801 was born as new routing in 1927 or 1928. It ran from NC 80 (now US 601) east to NC 65 (now US 158) Hillsdale. By 1930, NC 801 was extended south as new primary routing to NC 90 (current US 64) Fork Church.
In 1933, NC 801 was extended southwest from US 64-NC 90 as new primary routing to NC 80 as new primary routing, and also replaced NC 803 from NC 80 through Cooleemee to NC 150 (now NC 152) Mooresville.
Between 1934-36, NC 801 was rerouted in the Hillsdale area. Originally, NC 801 met US 158 a mile west of where it does now and duplexed east to the current NC 801 junction. It appears the old eastern approach to US 158 is not a continuous road today, split by I-40. It appears it used part of Gordon Ave north of I-40.
Between 1948-50, NC 801 was rerouted from Barber to Woodleaf by duplexing east a mile with US 70, then north on new construction to Woodleaf. This left behind about a 3-mile "Old NC 801." It appears that a brief US 64 duplex was eliminated in 1951 or 1952, leaving behind SR 1612. Finally, between 1956-58, NC 801 was rerouted in the Barber area again when US 70 was put on a new alignment bypassing Cleveland and Barber. The NC 801 duplex was moved as well.

Comment: | NC 801 is the only surviving 8xx state route in North Carolina, an honor it has had since 1941. |
