History: NC 903 was born in 1934 as new primary routing. Initially NC 903 ran from US 64 Robersonville south to Stokes then southwest to end at NC 11 House.
In 1938, NC 903 was extended as new routing north from US 64 to end at NC 125 east of Hamilton.

In 1967 or 1968, NC 903 was extended along NC 125 to Hamilton, then northwest as new routing through Palmyra to US 258/NC 125 Scotland Neck.
About 1972, NC 903 was extended northwest along NC 125 to Halifax, then west as new primary routing to I-95.

Between 1976-78, NC 903 was extended south with NC 11 through Greenville to Winterville, then jogged as new routing southwest to NC 102, then replaced NC 102 to Snow HIll, then replaced NC 91 south to end at US 70 LaGrange.

Between 1980-82, NC 903 was extended west from I-95 as new primary routing to US 158.
Between 1984-90, NC 903 was extended along US 158 to Littleton, then north as new primary routing to the Virginia State Line. Also in this timeframe, NC 903 was extended south as new routing from LaGrange to Albertson; duplex with NC 111 to Kornegay; duplex with NC 11 to Kenansville; new primary routing across I-40 to end at US 117 Magnolia.

In 1994 or 1995, NC 903 was extended west as new routing from Magnolia to NC 411.
Around 2003 or 2004, the entire eastern bypass of Kenansville was completed. The November 2006 Nov. 2006 Duplin County Map shows this as mainline NC 903. Oddly, there is no NC 903 Business and NC 11 is not on the bypass.

Comment: NC 903 was the highest number in the state from 1934-37.
The extension to Virginia seems odd, as NC 4 would have been the logical choice for extension north from Littleton.
I believe NC 903 is the longest 9xx route in the country right now.
NC 903 is another one of those NC highways that nobody would drive end-to-end as a through route as it is a piecemeal route.
