U.S. 44  listener suggestion
Formerly: US 44: In October 1930, North Carolina passed a resolution to get US 421 extended west from Boone NC to Johnson City via US 221 to Blowing Rock and Linville, NC 181 to Newland, NC 194 to Elk Park, and US 19-E into Tennessee.
North Carolina then thought US 421 should be renumbered as US 44 (or US 72, as they apparently didn't own any maps to consult).
In May 1931, AASHO didn't like this extension because 1) Tennessee didn't submit it too 2) It should go further west to justify the US 221 and US 19-E overlays and 3) as a bonus, they had to point out US 72 already existed.
North Carolina replied that don't blame them...the extension was Tennessee's idea and the numbering suggestions of 44 or 72 came from some rando.
