The 2nd US 321-A was created in 1948 as a number swap with US 321 through Lenoir. In 1957, US 321-A was extended south replacing mainline US 321 through Hudson and Granite Falls, ending at US 321 near the Catawba River.
In June 1964 (NCDOT), US 321-A was placed on one-way splits through downtown Lenoir. NB used the original routing on Mulberry St north to W St. west to Main St. SB stayed on Main St through downtown, then College Ave east back to Mulberry. In Sept 2006 (NCDOT), US 321-A north was rerouted to avoid Lenoir entirely, by replacing SR 1180 McLean Dr to cut over to US 321 south of Lenoir. SR 1180 was the original southern part of the Lenoir bypass. The old route became secondary except for small sections of US 64/NC 18 and NC 90.
Up until at least the late 1990s, most 321-A shields were square with the 4 characters and a dash squeezed on in there. There may not be any of these left. Now a look at the decommissioned US 321-A routes: The 1st US 321-A appeared in 1941 as a new bypass of Lenoir.
The 3rd US 321-A was created in 1956 when US 321 was given its first eastern bypass of Lincolnton.
