The Roads:

The oldest current US 501 Business was the 3rd one created, in May 1962 (NCDOT) as a renumbering of US 501 through Durham.
It appears that the one-way splits in Durham were created at the same time that the Business designation was created.
Oddly, the 1960 Official shows US 501 moved onto the bypass despite NCDOT documentation saying 1962.

It used today's NC 86 from the south then headed out east on Franklin St.
US 501 Business through Chapel Hill was decommissioned in June 1985 (NCDOT).
