The Roads:

The 1st US 701 Business was created between 1960-62 through Tabor City. It appears that this route was secondary for a time after US 701 was moved to the bypass.
The south end of US 701 Business is just inside South Carolina - the only business route in North Carolina to cross into its southern neighbor.

The 2nd US 701 Business was created between 1960-62 through Clarkton. It appears that this route was secondary for a time after US 701 was moved to the bypass.

The 3rd US 701 Business was created between 1963-68 as a renumbering of SR 1704 and SR 1917 through Whiteville. This had been mainline US 701 until about 1956.
In June 2012 (NCDOT), US 701 Business south was shortened by cutting west to US 701 on Leslie Newsome Ave. The old route to NC 130 is now SR 1974 (though still posted as 701 Business from NC 130 WB). South of NC 130 has been abandoned.
