F-series Routes
F-series routes are designated for frontage roads within Virginia.
Although frontage roads have existed back to the 1950's (the 1959 Official Map cover clearly shows a frontage road (now F-131) alongside I-95), F-routes weren't posted as such until 1974 (TS Smith).
F-series routes are posted in the field in standard SR ways. Like 9xxx routes, there is just one set of numbers for the whole state. Numbers start at F001 and go to at least F1066.
However, there are two groups of F-routes. Those for Interstates, and those for non-interstates.
There was a definite pattern for how F-routes were assigned in 1974:
Interstates:
Beginning in the Bristol District (District #1), F-routes were assigned sequentially along interstates completed, in an alphabetical listing of counties within the district:
Bland County got 001-003; Smyth County got 004-015; Washington County got 016-035; Wythe County got 036-047. For some reason 048 is in Bland County. Then on to District 2 (Salem), which saw 049-055 in Botetourt, 056-063 in Montgomery, 064-066 in Pulaski, 067-074 in Roanoke. Then on to District 3, etc.
The Hampton Roads cities and Richmond both got F-routes in this manner as well, with Richmond getting theirs with Henrico County and Hampton Roads after York County.
The original set of interstate F-routes went up to F-269 (Fairfax County). After that, numbers were assigned along newly completed interstates or newly built frontage roads in whatever order they appeared without regard to geographic location. Today the highest known interstate F-route is F-343. Potential new interstate F-routes may exist at the new Stafford County SR 627 interchange, or along I-73 if it is ever built.
Also in 1974, Frontage roads along other routes were given F-series designation. These were assigned in the same pattern as the interstate F-routes, but began at F-600. In District 1 (Bristol): Grayson 600; Scott 601-606; Tazewell 607-608. Then District 2 (Salem): Bedford 609; Franklin 611-615; Henry 616; Montgomery 617-618; Pulaski 619; Roanoke 620. Then District 3, etc. The numbers reached F-725 this way with a couple odd exceptions, such as F-709. After that it was assigned in the order of creation regardless of location.
Independent Cities did not receive F-routes for non-interstates right away, and Fairfax County didn't get its set until after all of District 9 and a few additions on the end of the list. Suffolk's F-routes were assigned as Nanesmond County.
The highest F-route is F-1066, but new bypasses are in the works in several locations and therefore more numbers are sure to come.
F-series routes do not appear on VDOT official state maps, and on the gazeteer only a few are labeled. They are definitety labeled in the 1995 VDOT County atlas. It turns out that MSN's current map finding service shows F-series routes as well.
(VDOT) after an entry means the only place anyone has found the route is on VDOT's website.
