Creation: SC 71 appeared in 1925 or 1926 as new primary routing, running from SC 18 (now SC 28-71 CONN) Abbeville west to Lowndesville. This is the only SC 71.
Adjustments: In 1928, SC 71 was truncated to east of Lowndesville, replaced by SC 82 (now SC 81 and S-1-228 which used to loop back to SC 71-81 jct).

Between 1963-66, SC 71 was extended over SC 28 Bus to end at SC 72 south of Downtown Abbeville.
Between 1971-75, SC 71 east was truncated to SC 20 Abbeville, leaving behind SC 20.

Comment: SC 71 is mostly a local road connecting Abbeville County's west side to the county seat.
There is a SC 71 TRUCK that follows SC 28 and SC 72 around Abbeville to SC 20.
