SC 461  not currently assigned
Previous SC 461's: SC 461: Appeared in 1940 as new primary routing. Ran from SC 46-170 south to Levy Station.
In 1941 or 1942, SC 461 was extended from Levy Station west to US 17 (probably current S-27-84), for a total of 6 miles.
In 1948, SC 461 was downgraded to part of S-27-34. Eventually, the N-S portion of SC 461 became part of SC 170 ALT.

Creation: Appeared as new state routing in 1941 or 1942. Originally ran from SC 170 (current US 278-SC 170 jct) east for 5 miles, then dropping south 2 miles to end at SC 46 in Bluffton. SC 462 was only in Beaufort County at this time.
Adjustments: In 1956, SC 462 east was truncated to the current US 278-SC 46 jct, replaced by SC 46.
In 1957 or 1958, SC 462 was extended from its west end north to Coosawhatchie and over to end at SC 128 (current US 278) Gillisonville.
Between 1962-64, SC 462 was extended west again over a secondary road (although the western half of this extension was part of SC 367 before 1948) to its current end in Robertville. This brought SC 462 to its maximum length of 49 miles.
Between 1965-67, SC 462 east was truncated to US 278 (current SC 336) Old House. The old route over to SC 46 near Bluffton became part of US 278.
About 1998, SC 462 was extended south replacing part of US 278 from Old House to its current end at SC 170.
Improvements: SC 462 has always been paved since its inception.
SC 462 is 4-laned on what used to be its US 17 multiplex in Coosawhatchie before I-95 came along. This was 4-laned between 1962-64.
Comment: SC 462 forms a circuitous route around Jasper County.

 
 
SC 463  not currently assigned
Previous SC 463's: SC 463: Appeared in 1941 or 1942 as new primary routing. Ran from SC 46 (current S-7-13) Bluffton (at jct of Bridge St. and Boundary St. southwest to the May River, less than a mile away.
In 1948 SC 463 was downgraded to Bridge St.

 
 
SC 464  not currently assigned
Previous SC 464's: SC 464: Appeared in 1941 or 1942 as a new primary route. Ran from SC 46 in western Bluffton north to SC 462 (current US 278), a distance of 3 miles.
In 1948, SC 464 was downgraded to S-7-29.

 
 
SC 465  not currently assigned
Previous SC 465's: SC 465: Appeared in 1941 or 1942 as new primary routing. Ran from SC 170 southeast to SC 46 Pritchardville, then jogged east with SC 46 for a mile before spurring south to Stoney Creek.
The 3 miles of SC 465 were downgraded to S-7-34 and S-7-35 in 1948.

 
 
SC 466  not currently assigned
Previous SC 466's: SC 466: Appeared in 1941 or 1942 as new routing. Ran from US 521 (current S-28-2) east to the Sumter-Kershaw Line 1.6 miles away.
In 1948, SC 466 was downgraded to S-28-23.

 
 
SC 478  not currently assigned
Previous SC 478's: SC 478 #1: Appeared between 1974-77 as new routing. Ran from US 1-78 to SC 302 as a southwest loop around Aiken.
SC 478 was renumbered as an extended SC 118 between 1986-88.

SC 478 #2: Appeared around 1989, as the number assigned to Columbia's Southeastern Beltway. The number was assigned when the freeway was opened from I-26 to US 76-378. When the freeway went only to SC 48, it was just signed as TO SC 48. This had once been assigned as I-326 before any construction had actually begun.
SC 478 was always signed as SC 478 TEMP and was renumbered as I-77 when the freeway was completely finished by 1996. SC 478 does not appear on any official maps that I currently have.
SC 490  not currently assigned
Previous SC 490's: SC 490: Appeared in 1940 as new primary routing. Ran from SC 211 (current SC 160) west of Fort Mill north to the North Carolina State Line where Carowinds is.
In 1941 or 1942, SC 490 was extended through Fort Mill and proceeded southeast to end at US 521 north of Hancock, bringing SC 490's length to 14 miles.
In 1948, SC 490 was downgraded to S-46-22, S-46-36, and S-29-41.
SC 496

Creation: Appears in my 1980's county map atlas, but unsure how long SC 496 has been here (if it really exists at all!)

Improvements: Fully paved at creation; multilane east of US 176.
Comment: SC 496 may not in fact be signed. I frequently traveled through Union from 1987-90 and also wandered by in 2000. This route was only ever posted as SC 49 TRUCK.
