SC 90
From: BUSUS 501 Red Hill (Horry County)
To: US 17 Little River (Horry County).

Creation: Appeared about 1930 as new primary routing. Originally ran from SC 38 (current S-26-14) Red Hill east to SC 9 (current S-26-638) near Wampee.
Adjustments: In 1933, SC 90 was extended east to end at US 117-SC 9 (current S-26-20) Nixons Crossroads. This extension replaced part of SC 9.
In 1937 or 1938, SC 90 was extended west through Conway and ending at SC 175 (current SC 41) north of Brittons Neck.
In 1939, SC 90 was rerouted below Brittons Neck to continue west, ending at SC 175 (current SC 41) near Gresham. The old route north through Brittons Neck became SC 908. SC 90 was 51 miles long at this point.
In 1951 or 1952, SC 90 west of Conway was renumbered as part of US 378.
In 1971 or 1972, SC 90 was extended east from Nixon's Crossroads to its current end at US 17 near Little River. This short extension replaced part of US 17. This piece runs on the east side of US 17 and is not explicitly shown on SC Official Maps.
Improvements: The first few miles east of Red Hill were paved in 1938
All of SC 90 east of Red Hill was paved in 1939
In 1940, SC 90 was paved 5 miles westward from Conway.
In 1941 or 1942, SC 90 was paved west to the Little Pee Dee River.
By 1948, SC 90 was paved west to SC 908.
The section between today's SC 41 and SC 908 was shown as gravel in 1940, but on maps from 1942-50 was shown as dotted line ("projected road").
No multilane sections shown on 2005 Official Map.
Comment: SC 90 serves eastern Horry County.
SC 90 along with S-26-57 and US 701 make a decent Grand Strand Bypass.
In the Nixonton area there is a dirt road named "old SC 90" which crosses the swamp on a slightly different alignment than today's paved version.
SC 90 is blown off by the new SC 31 freeway.
SC 91  not currently assigned
Previous SC 91's: SC 91: Appeared in 1923 as new routing. Ran from SC 9 east of Lockhart north to SC 5 (current SC 49-211 jct) Sharon.
In 1937 or 1938, SC 91 was extended west with SC 9 to Lockhart, then southwest as new routing ending at SC 215 (current SC 49-215 CONN) Monarch.
In 1940, SC 91 was extended north to today's SC 5/S-46-23 jct, giving SC 91 its longest run at 34 miles.
In 1948, SC 91 north was truncated back to Sharon, leaving behind S-46-23.
In 1951 or 1952, SC 91 was rerouted at Lockhart to follow SC 9 to Mt. Tabor, then cut south back to SC 91's diagonal routing. Also, in this timeframe, SC 91 was extended northeast from Sharon to US 321 York, replacing part of SC 5.
In 1955 or 1956, SC 91 was renumbered in its entirety to SC 49, which it remains today, except Mt. Tabor south to the diagonal is now part of SC 105.
SC 92

To: SC 49 west of Cross Anchor (Spartanburg County).

Creation: Created in 1925 or 1926 as a renumbering of part of SC 9. Originally ran from SC 10 (current US 221) Enoree east through Cross Anchor to Union, then north to SC 9 Kelly.
Adjustments:In 1939, SC 92 was extended north 3 miles from SC 9.
In 1940, SC 92 was extended northeast to SC 98 (current SC 105) for a max length of 39 miles.
In 1948, SC 92 was rerouted at Union to proceed east to Monarch, then southeast to SC 215. This replaced SC 215's original Union approach. The old SC 92 route north to Kelly remained part of SC 11 (SC 18 today), then downgraded to S-44-4 and S-44-13.
In 1949, SC 92 was extended west as new routing to SC 101 Gray Court.
In 1955 or 1956, SC 92 east was truncated to its current end, replaced by SC 49 and the SC 49-215 CONN.
Improvements: SC 92's first pavement was its SC 11 (now SC 18) multiplex above Union, in place by 1932.
In 1934, SC 92 was fully paved above Union.
In 1939, SC 92 was fully paved from Enoree to Union.
SC 92 was fully paved in all alignments in 1948.
No multilane segments exist on SC 92.
Comment: SC 92 is erroneously shown on the 1927 Clason's as running from Spartanburg to Kelly.
SC 92 has been reduced to minor route since the extension of SC 49.

 
 
SC 93

Creation: Created between 1962-64, running as it does now. This was a renumbering of US 123, except within Easley, which was US 123 Business. This is the 2nd SC 93.
Adjustments: None.
Improvements: Fully paved upon designation.
SC 93 is multilane within Easley (since at least mid-80s) and Clemson (since at least mid-80's).
Comment: SC 93 serves Clemson University, as well as the towns of Liberty, Norris and Central.
SC 93 was the original route of SC 2.
SC 93 is the only primary route anywhere I have driven 100% of on a bicycle.
Previous SC 93's: SC 93 #1: Created in 1925 or 1926 as new primary routing. Ran from SC 26 (current US 521 Bus) Lancaster north to the state line.
Around 1930, SC 93 was extended southwest to SC 97 near Nitrolee.
In 1937, SC 93 above Lancaster was renumbered as SC 200.
In 1951 or 1952, the remaining piece of SC 93 was also renumbered as SC 200.

 
SC 94  not currently assigned
Previous SC 94's: SC 94 #1: Appeared in 1928 as a renumbering of SC 47 #1. Ran from SC 9 Lake View north to the NC Line, where the road continued as NC 70.
In 1938, SC 94 became part of SC 41.

SC 94 #2: Appeared in 1938 as a renumbering of SC 41. Ran as a short spur between US 301 and New Zion in northern Clarendon County.
In 1939, SC 94 was extended east to the Pudding Swamp for a total of 4 miles.
In 1940, SC 94 was extended east to US 52 Cades.
In 1941 or 1942, SC 94 was extended both directions: east to SC 175 (current SC 261) Coopers and west to SC 54 (current US 378) near the Sumter-Clarendon Line. This brought SC 94 to a length of 31 miles.
In 1948, SC 94 was downgraded to S-14-37, S-45-33, S-45-47, and S-45-28. Later, Cades to Coopers became part of SC 512.

Previous SC 95's: SC 95 #1: Appeared in 1925 or 1926 as new routing. Ran from SC 9 (current Main St) Chesterfield north to the NC State Line.
In 1927, SC 95 was extended southwest to US 1 near McBee.
In 1937, SC 95 was renumbered as SC 85. Today it is SC 145.

SC 95 #2: Appeared in 1939 as new routing. Ran 5 miles from SC 9 Little Rock northward.
In 1940, SC 95 was extended north to the NC State Line for a total length of 9 miles.
In 1951 or 1952, SC 95 was renumbered as part of SC 57.
SC 96  not currently assigned
Previous SC 96's: SC 96 #1: Appeared in 1928 as a renumbering of SC 501. Ran from US 1-SC 9 (probably the corner of Front St and Church St) Cheraw northwest to the NC State Line, about 10 miles away. SC 96 met up with NC 80 at that point.
In 1932, SC 96 was paired with an extended US 601, and was dropped from the route in 1933. Today, this is mainly US 52, though the Cheraw routing is probably along Front St. and SC 96 may have also used S-13-62.

SC 96 #2: Appeared in 1940 as new primary routing. Ran from SC 200 near the NC Line east to SC 906 (current SC 9) near the Lynches River. A second discontinuous piece of SC 96 appeared from SC 9 (current US 601) north 2 miles to Taxahaw.
In 1941 or 1942, SC 96 was extended west to US 521, bringing SC 96 to a total length of 19 miles.
In 1948, SC 96 was downgraded to S-29-28, S-29-39, and S-29-27.

Creation: Appeared as new primary routing in 1925 or 1926. Originally ran only from SC 16 (current US 321) Chester east to SC 22 (current SC 200) Great Falls.
Adjustments: About 1930, SC 97 was placed on a road running from SC 26 (current US 521-601) northwest through Liberty Hill to the Catawba River (the 1930 Clasons implied no crossing to Great Falls).
In 1931, SC 97 was connected across the Catawba River. In this process, SC 97 was moved to its current route north of Great Falls. The short piece from Beckhamville and Great Falls became SC 99.
Between 1962-64, SC 97 was extended northwest through Chester with US 321 Business, the northwest through Hickory Grove and Smyrna to its current end at SC 5 Kings Creek. Chester to Kings Creek had been SC 907.
In 1982, SC 97 was rerouted slightly at I-77's interchange, leaving behind S-12-318 and S-12-319.
Sometime in the 1990's SC 97 was placed on the Chester Bypass east and north of town, leaving behind US 321 Business. The part of the bypass west of SC 72-121 had been SC 132.
Improvements: SC 97 was paved from Chester to Beckhamville in 1935, as well as the first several miles north of US 521-601.
The remainder of SC 97 in Kershaw County was paved in 1936.
SC 97 has been fully paved since 1937 or 1938.
SC 97 was 4-laned on the US 321 multiplex south of Chester in 1964.
The Chester Bypass was 4-laned when SC 97 was placed on it.
No other substantial multilane segments exist.
Comment: SC 97 serves some lonely parts of Kershaw County and York County, but is a main thoroughfare in much of Chester County, connecting I-77 to both Chester and Great Falls.
SC 98  not currently assigned
Previous SC 98's: SC 98 #1: Appeared about 1927 as new routing. Ran from SC 9 (current S-34-36) Wallace northeast to the state line where it met NC 204.
In 1937, SC 98 was renumbered as SC 77. Today it is all of SC 177, plus Delta Plant Road.

SC 98 #2:Appeared in 1940 as new routing. Ran from SC 9 Mt Tabor north to the Cherokee-Union Line.
In 1941 or 1942, SC 98 was extended in both directions: south to SC 91 (current SC 49) and north to Saratt and west to end at SC 18 (current SC 150) in SW Cherokee County, for a total length of 22 miles.
In 1948, SC 98 was reduced to running from SC 9 Mt. Tabor to SC 11 (current SC 18), leaving behind secondary routes (today these are parts of SC 105 and SC 211).
In 1949, SC 98 was re-extended west to SC 18 (current SC 150).
In 1955 or 1956, SC 98 was replaced by SC 105 from Mt. Tabor to Saratt and SC 211 from Saratt west to today's SC 150.
SC 99

Creation: Implied to have been created in 1931. Ran only from SC 97 Beckhamville southeast to SC 5 (current US 21-SC 200) Nitrolee. This was a replacement for part of SC 97.
Adjustments:In 1937 or 1938, SC 99 was extended north as new routing to SC 9.
In 1948, SC 99 was reduced to its original routing.
In 1949, SC 99 was re-extended north to SC 9 Bascomville.
Improvements: SC 99 was paved below SC 99 by 1936
SC 99 was fully paved in 1941 or 1942
no multilane segments exist on SC 99.
Comment: I drove SC 99 in the late 80's and recall it to be dull.
