Creation: Appeared in 1932, the same year it appeared nationally. Originally ran from US 78 to US 29 Anderson as it does today, except it followed today's SC 246 to Ninety Six and SC 34 over to Greenwood. US 178 was added to SC 24 in all other locations, and below Orangeburg this was also part of SC 2
| Adjustments: In 1933, US 178 was switched in Greenwood County to its current alignment, leaving behind SC 246 and SC 34. Also, SC 24 was dropped from all US 178 routing. In 1937 or 1938, US 178 was extended to North Carolina, replacing the original SC 14. In 1949, US 178 was placed on its first Orangeburg Bypass, using Chestnut St east to Magnolia Ave south to Broughton St, which was US 178's original routing. The old route through Orangeburg became US 178 Business. Between 1960-64, US 178 was rerouted through central Anderson onto Murray Ave, which had recently been part of US 29 Bus. Main St remained part of SC 28 (SC 28 Bus today). Between 1965-67, US 178's bypass around Orangeburg was expanded to today's loop. Magnolia Avenue became US 21 Business and some of US 601. US 178 was given its Greenwood Bypass around the east side between 1968-70. This was an addition to the SC 72 Bypass, and new construction south of US 221-SC 72. Improvements: Fully paved upon designation except for the piece that is today's SC 246 below Ninety Six. US 178 has been fully paved since 1933. The first multilane section of US 178 was in place by 1964: Murray Ave in Anderson; US 29 Byp multiplex; about 3 miles worth in Greenwood The next section to be upgraded was an extended Greenwood section, south to the US 25 SB split; also, Murray Ave north to the US 76 WB split north of Anderson, both between 1965-67. Between 1968-70, US 178 was 4-lane on all its US 25 multiplex not on the Greenwood Bypass; also US 178 was 4-laned from US 29 east to SC 252. In 1974 or 1975, US 178 was four laned from SC 252 to Belton. Between 1983-85, the northern half of the US 178 Greenwood Bypass was 4-laned. Official Maps show the Orangeburg bypass 4-laned west of US 301 between 1993-97, but I know it was 4-laned by 1987. Comment: US 178 serves several main towns areas - Orangeburg, Saluda, Greenwood, Belton, Anderson, Pickens - but is not a primary route to get anywhere. Of course, I used US 178 all the time running back and forth from Goose Creek to Clemson. US 178 has no multilane sections by itself besides a short part of the Orangeburg bypass. US 178 is the closest primary route to South Carolina's highest point - Mt. Sassafras - which is easily reached by car via S-39-199. US 178 north of SC 11 is an actual mountain road - quite twisty - a rarity in South Carolina. |

Creation: Appeared in 1949 when US 178 Bypass north of Orangeburg was built. This was of course mainline US 178 before that. Originally ran to Magnolia Ave (current US 21 Bus).

Improvements: Fully paved from inception with a multilane section shown on the 1980's county atlas from S-38-811 to about SC 33 (1.8 miles). Comment: US 178 Business for Orangeburg uses Broughton St. through the town. US 178 Business west of downtown was part of original SC 6, and east of downtown was part of original SC 2. |
