Creation: Appeared in 1923 as an original state route, running from TN 15 Whiteville to TN 1 (now W Main at W Lafayette) Jackson
Adjustments: In 1927 or 1928, TN 18 was changed to run from Jackson south through Bolivar to Grand Junction, then southwest to Mississippi. The original route used Newson Rd and May Rd out of Whiteville, then there was no route across the swamp and Hatchie River yet to the Cloverport area. TN 18 used Thornton Rd then Upton/Uptonville Rd to Uptonville; Steam Ferry Rd to Riverside Dr into Jackson.
In 1930, TN 18 was removed from Medon-Malesus Rd north of Medon.
In 1931, TN 18 was given a more direct alignment from Bolivar to the Mississippi line, leaving behind Hickory Valley Rd; Richardson Rd; Tommy Loop; today's TN 368; TN 57
In 1931 or 1932, TN 18's north end in Jackson was rearranged to its current approach to US 45, then continued with US 45 to end at US 70 (Royal St at Main/Lafayette pair). The old TN 18 routing used Caldwell Rd west to Riverside Rd north.

In 1955, AASHO turned down a request for a new US highway from Pascagoula MS to Jackson TN. In Tennessee the route would've used TN 18 from Bolivar to Jackson. No number was suggested but I feel like if they would've included replacing US 45W this might've been more palatable, and the number I would've chosen is US 47, though an x45 would also have worked.
In 1958, AASHO turned down a request for a new US highway from Beaumont MS to Jackson TN. In Tennessee the route would've again used TN 18 from Bolivar to Jackson
In 1959, TN 18 was removed from "Eighteen Loop" at the TN 100 interchange area.
Posting: TN 18 is posted as primary routing throughout
The overlay with US 64 is fully posted.
Secret US Route Overlay: None
Comment: TN 18 serves Bolivar on its slant from Jackson to northern Mississippi
