Creation: An original state route. In 1924 it ran from TN 5-41 (now TN 367) Trenton to TN 1 (now US 70) Huntingdon.
Adjustments: In 1927 or 1928, TN 77 was extended north with US 45 (now US 45W) to Dyer, then west as new routing to end at US 51 (now TN 211) Newbern.

If TN 77-104 used Huntington St, (no longer connects to) Christmasville Rd and Cades Loop east out of Trenton it stopped doing so by 1938.
About 1948. TN 77 was removed from Park Ave between 1st and Van Hook Sts in Milan.

In 1953 or 1954, TN 77 was extended east with US 70 into Huntingdon, then north as new routing to end at TN 69 (now US 641) Paris.
In 1954, TN 77 was removed from W Broad St in Dyer and placed on Yorkville St/Hwy.
In 1963, TN 77 was placed on the US 45W bypass of Trenton, leaving behind TN 5 Bus (now TN 367) and TN 104.
About 1979, TN 77 was extended west to the new US 51 freeway in Newbern. This may also be when TN 77 was removed from College St/York St/Dyer St and placed on its direct routing through northern Newbern.

Between 1974-81, TN 77 was placed on the bypass around the west and north of Huntingdon. The old route used today's TN 22 byp south to US 70 Business to (removed) Northwood Dr to High St
About 2000, TN 77 was placed on the new US 45W bypass of Dyer, leaving behind an extended TN 185 and S. Main St southeast to the Trenton area.
