History: In April 2016, I-36 was officially requested by NCDOT to AASHTO for designation for the future interstate corridor running along US 70 from I-40 in Garner southeast to Morehead City. This corridor was placed into the interstate system via the December 2015 FAST act that amended the ISTEA Act of 1991. During the April 2016 AASHTO meeting, the number for 36 was rejected and AASHTO and NCDOT agreed on the number 42 instead.
In fall 2024, I-42 was signed (replacing US 70) from I-40 to US 70 Powhatan and also replaced US 70 Bypass around Goldsboro.
Comments: I-42 will eventually use the following existing roadways: US 70 from Powhatan to west of Goldsboro; US 70 around La Grange; US 70 from Dover to Morehead City except at Havelock.
The biggest challenge will be trying to make a full interchange with I-95 in Selma
