The Road: Begins at NC 18 Laurel Springs (Alleghany County) and ends at the Tennessee State Line (Watauga County). The route continues a couplemore miles as TN 67 to US 421 in Trade, TN.

History:
NC 88 appeared in 1938 as a new primary route, running from NC 16 Index east to NC 18.
In 1940, NC 88 was extended west with NC 16 to Jefferson, then replaced NC 16 west to the Tennessee Line.

Comment: NC 88 is not a particularly straight route but does not change much in altitude along the way.
