| The Road: | Begins at US 158 Bertha and ends at the Currituck Sound in Poplar Branch, all within Currituck County | Towns and Attractions: | Currituck Co: None | History: | NC 136 was born by legislative act October 23, 2002 [Steffora] in a route swap with NC 3, running the way it does now.

The first NC 136 appeared in 1974 as new construction from NC 73 Concord to about its I-85 overpass, then as an upgrade to SR 2081 and 2114 in Kannapolis to end at US 29-601 Kannapolis.

Between 1988-90, NC 136 was moved onto what is now Dale Earnhardt Blvd, leaving behind its US 29-A duplex (now SR 1008) and SR 1920 Vance Ave In July 1997 (NCDOT), NC 136 was extended east to US 601, mostly as new routing and as a replacement of the southernmost bit of US 601 Business. In Oct 2002, NC 136 was renumbered as NC 3.

 | Comment: | Current NC 136 is a mystery to me. Why has this needed to be a state highway back to the 1930s? |
