NC 142 was born 1975 as a renumbering of NC 42, running from NC 11-42 east to NC 125-903.
In 1980, NC 142 was extended west with NC 42, then replaced Martin SR 1318 and Edgecombe SR 1532 over to NC 44 (now NC 111).
