NC 204 was an original state route that ran from NC 20 (now US 74 Bus) Hamlet northeast to NC 50 (now McDonald Church Rd) near Hoffman.
In 1925, NC 204 east was truncated to Marston, replaced by a relocated NC 50 (now US 1).

In 1928 or 1929, NC 204 was extended southwest as new primary routing to the South Carolina line heading for Wallace, SC.
In late 1934, NC 204 was renumbered as NC 77. Today it is NC 177 except right in Hamlet NC 204 used E. Franklin Rd; NC 177; Spring St; Rice St; Main St; Entwistle St; NC 177.
