History: NC 205 was born about 1935, running essentially as it does today.
Between 1946-49, NC 205 was extended along what had been part of US 74 southwest to current US 74.
Between 1950-53, NC 205 was rerouted at Marshville to run due south to US 74 as it does now, leaving behind SR 1740 Main St.

The first NC 205 was an original state highway, running from NC 20 (now US 74 Bus) Kings Mountain southwest to South Carolina at Grover.
In late 1926, US 29 was added to all of NC 205.
in late 1934, NC 205 was dropped from the numbering system. Today it is part US 29 and part NC 216.

Comment: Today's NC 205 would've fit nicely in the original numbering scheme that had just been scrapped...
