The Road: Begins at NC 274 near Cherryville (Gaston County) and ends at the South Carolina line near Grover (Cleveland County). The route continues a short distance as SC 216 to Kings Mtn National Battlefield.

Cleveland Co: Kings Mountain
History: NC 216 appeared in 1930 as new routing, running only from US 29/NC 205 down to the SC line. It is not on the 1930 Official but is on the 1930 Cleveland County map.
About 1956, NC 216 was extended north with US 29 a short distance, then replaced US 29 into Kings Mountain. Additionally, NC 216 was extended north as upgraded secondary routing to its current end at NC 274.
