History: NC 231 was born in 1935, running from US 64 (now US 64-A just east of its NC 98 split) south to NC 39 Emit.
NC 231 was extended to US 64 Wendell in 1948.
NC 231's north end was shifted west to the current NC 98 east end, to accomodate the new US 64 freeway about 1975, leaving behind a small bit of Jernigan Rd.

The first NC 231 was born in 1925 as new primary routing from NC 21-23 (now US 701/NC 41/NC 87 Bus/NC 242 jct) Elizabethtown southeast to NC 20 (now US 74-76) Acme.
Around 1928, NC 231 was renumbered as part of NC 21. Today it is mostly NC 87 except on the south end it used "Old NC 87"
