NC 273 was born in 1930 as new primary routing, running from NC 29 (now NC 7) Belmont Abbey north to NC 27 Mt. Holly.
About 1940, NC 273 was extended north as new primary routing to NC 16 near Lucia.

In 1949 or 1950, NC 273 was extended north with NC 16 Lowesville then west as upgraded routing to end at NC 27 near Goodsonville.
In 1961 or 1962, NC 273 was rerouted on its southern end to meet NC 7 south of US 29-74 in Belmont, leaving behind SR 2093 Belmont-Mount Holly Rd.
In 1967, NC 273 north was truncated back to its first NC 16 end, leaving behind part of NC 73 and SR 1511.
Between 1980-82, NC 273 was extended south as an upgrade to SR 2524 and SR 2525 to its current end at NC 279.
In 1988 or 1989, NC 273 was extended north to its current ending, replacing some of NC 16.
In 2001 or 2002, NC 273 was rerouted around the east side of central Mount Holly, leaving behind Main St.
