History: NC 305 is an original state highway that appears on the 1921 official. It originally ran from NC 30 (current NC 11 Business) Aulander northwest through Rich Square to end at NC 48 (now US 158) Jackson.
About 1929, NC 305 was extended north as new primary routing to end at the village of Seaboard.

Between 1931-36, NC 305 was straightened out between Jackson and Seaboard to its current route. Originally, NC 305 used Pleasant Grove Rd north to Jackson Bypass east back to current NC 305.

In 1933, NC 305 was extended from Seaboard southwest as new primary routing to US 301/NC 40 north of Garysburg. It appears that by 1934 NC 305 was rerouted at Gumberry to go directly to Garysburg, leaving behind today's Elam Church Rd.
In 1938, NC 305 north was truncated to Seaboard. The segment west to US 301 became NC 195. Today this is part of NC 186.

In 1940, NC 305 was extended southeast from Aulander to its current south end near Windsor, replacing some of original NC 30.

Comment:
There is not a lot of excitement on NC 305, either. It is a sleepy ride through farming country. The NC 561 multiplex in the Rich Square area did not come about until the early 60's...
