NC 321: An original state highway, NC 321 originally ran from NC 32 Gilden and ran south to Belvidere and ending at NC 342 (now Main St. Extension - old US 17) Winfall.
In 1928, NC 321 was extended northwest over new routing to end at NC 30 (today's US 158 Business) Gatesville.
In 1932, NC 321 was extended north again to Gates and the Virginia State Line (at US 13's crossing). The Virginia side was not a primary route, though VA 506 (VA 53 after July 1933) ran to just below Whaleyville. VA 53 was extended to meet NC 321 in Aug 1933.
Since US 321 existed in North Carolina, NC 321 had to be renumbered in 1935. It became NC 37, which it remains today, plus the last half-mile of US 13 in North Carolina.
