NC 87 Bus #1: Born in 1997, NC 87 was placed on a new bypass south of Elizabethtown, leaving behind NC 87 Business. NC 87 Business follows Broad St all the way through town. The western half is duplexed with NC 41 and was the route of original NC 22. The eastern half was the original NC 231.
NC 87 Bus #2:Born in Aug 2013 when NC 87 was placed on newly constructed freeway around the east of Sanford. The old route through town is bannerless NC 87 while a BYPASS banner is on the freeway.
