The 1st US 158-A was created about 1946 when US 158 was given its Gatesville bypass. There is a small chance the bypass was 158-A first until 1948 (a pattern that several other routes had in North Carolina).
At any rate, US 158-A became US 158 Business in 1960. Despite county maps showing this change, official maps showed this as US 158-A through 1980 afterwich the route has been shown but unlabeled ever since.
The 2nd US 158-A was created in 1951 when US 158 was given its Henderson bypass. US 158-A became US 158 Business in 1960. Despite county maps showing this change, official maps showed this as US 158-A into the 1990s before they finally labeled it as 158 Business.
The 3rd US 158-A was created in 1951 when US 158 was given its Warrenton bypass. US 158-A became US 158 Business in 1960. Despite county maps showing this change, official maps up through 2011-12 still show this as US 158-A.
The 4th US 158-A was created as early as 1954 when a partial bypass of Oxford between US 15 and US 158 east of town was built. However, the 1957 Granville County map did not label it as anything. County maps through at least 1962-68 show it explicitly as US 158-A. In 1971, US 158-A was eliminated when I-85 was built on top of it.
