The Road: US 21 Business was born in 1966 as a renumbering of MainlineUS 21. It used Bridge St through Jonesville and Gwyn Ave/Market St/Bridge St in Elkin.

Between 1969-82, US 21 Business was removed from the Gwyn Ave/N. Bridge St bridge and placed on the Bridge St/Main St bridge, using River Rd to cut over to the current routing, which had once been mainline 21 years earlier.
