The Road: US 21 Business was born in 1966 as a renumbering of Mainline US 21. It used Bridge St through Jonesville and Gwyn Ave/Market St/Bridge St in Elkin.

In June 1973 (NCDOT), US 21 Business was removed from the Gwyn St/N. Bridge St bridge (now torn down) and instead used SR 1399 Elm St to use the SR 1310/1148 Bridge St/Main St bridge, which had once been mainline 21 years earlier.
