History: US 276 is an original US Highway but didn't appear in North Carolina until 1932. It originally ran only from US 64/NC 28 in Brevard south to South Carolina as an addition to NC 284.
In late 1934, NC 284 was dropped from US 276.
In 1940, US 276 was extended north to US 19-23 (now 23 BUsiness) Waynesville, replacing more of NC 284.
Between 1950-53, US 276 was removed from SR 1817 Pigeon Gap Rd east of Waynesville.
In 1960, US 276 was extended north to US 19 near Dellwood, replacing more NC 284.
In Feb 1969 (NCDOT), US 276 was extended west with US 19 to Dellwood, then replaced NC 284 to I-40.

Comments: US 276 is largely a mountain road in North Carolina. Gets up to some srious altitude where it crosses the Blue Ridge Pkwy.
US 276 runs right past Looking Glass Falls which is in a lovely setting, though not very tall.
There was a proposal in the late 1930s to extend US 276 into Tennessee but that never materialized.
