The Return Bike Ride

As mentioned on my Bike South page, the northernmost island at the Chesapeake Channel tunnel was the turnaround point for the bike event, with various services set up and available.  After spending a few minutes resting and grabbing a bite to eat, I began the trip back north.  I started my return ride around 8:30am, exactly an hour after I first started my southbound ride.  Although there was still somewhat of a crosswind, the wind was also part tailwind on the return trip, which allowed for much faster travel.

The number of bikers at the event was relatively small as I headed south.  That soon changed as I made my way north and passed an increasing number of bikers starting out on their rides.

Biking Back North

Starting the ride back north, one can see the cones used for channelization at the south end, both for bikes and for vehicles.  Further north, it was weird going against the "normal flow of traffic", as under normal conditions vehicle traffic is coming in the opposite direction along here.

The first of many groups of bicyclists I would pass as I headed back north.  Due in part to the early time I began, only a couple other individuals passed me going in the same direction as I was..
Passing by the aid-station mentioned on my south bike page.
Two of the unique-looking bicycles I would pass.
This group was taking a quick break on the side before continuing back north.

By the time I got back to the North Channel bridge (~8:50am), there was a significant number of southbound bikers.  This would continue for the rest of my ride.
I can honestly say that is is the first 4-wheel bicycle I have ever seen.
The third time I passed this bicycle, as the owner was starting his second round-trip.

Passing lots of bicyclists on Fisherman's Island.
Another aid station was set up at the scenic overlook next to the Fisherman's Inlet bridge.

Finishing up my ride.  Once can see how bicyclists were separated from regular traffic going through the North Toll Plaza.  Also, even being on 2 lanes for most of the trip, traffic flowed fairly well for vehicles along the CBBT.  There were two exceptions to this, as I'll explain on my last page.

Thanks to more favorable wind conditions, my return trip time was significantly less than the trip down, coming in at 37 minutes, or a 13.8 MPH average.
