Bicycle/Pedestrian Lane
The long-awaited bicycle/pedestrian lane on the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge (I-95/495/Capital Beltway crossing of the Potomac River) opened to the public on June 6, 2009. The date had symbolism not just as the anniversary of D-Day, but coincidentally, it was also National Trails Day (a program of the American Hiking Society).
The route connects Alexandria, VA with Prince George's County, MD via the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Specifically, it connects from the Washington St Bridge Deck in Alexandria (with direct connections to the Mount Vernon Trail, Old Town Alexandria, and a path extending to the US 1/Huntington Ave intersection) to Oxon Hill Rd near Indian Head Hwy (MD 210). A connection to National Harbor is still under construction.
After an opening ceremony and ribbon cutting, the lane was open to the public on the Virginia side around 12:30pm. Yours truly was one of the first on the new bike/ped lane, being #6 onto the bridge, and #3 to cross the bridge.
