US 129: In Aug 1959, Tennessee requested US 129 be extended north to US 58 at Cumberland Gap in Virginia. In Oct 1959 AASHO rejected this request due to the route not being up to standards and also overpopulation of US routes in the area.
Tennessee tried again in March 1962 and March 1963. AASHO kept saying no.
Had US 129 been extended it would've brought a situation of what to do once the US 25E tunnel was completed. No matter the decision, US 129 would likely have been removed from Virginia at that time.
