Creation: First requested in 1941 but deferred in May 1941 (AASHO). West Virginia apparently posted their segment anyway and based on this AASHO approved US 522 extending from Hancock MD to US 60 near Powhatan in July 1943 replacing VA 522. From Sperryville to Culpeper this was also an addition to VA 3.

Comments: US 522 is mostly a minor route in Virginia.
US 522 is on sub-optimal alignments from VA 6 to US 33; although on good straight alignment from VA 208 to Culpeper, the road seems narrow.
North of Winchester US 522 provides easy access to I-70 in Hancock, MD and is a viable alternative to I-81 to Hagerstown to pick up I-70.
