Creation: SC 51 appeared about 1926 as new primary routing, running from SC 40 (now US 701) Campfield northwest via Outland, Hemingway, and Johnsonville to end at SC 41 (now US 52) near Florence. Some of this was an overlay with existing SC 411. This is the only SC 51.
| Adjustments: About 1938, SC 51 was removed from today's S-21-1007 Cox Rd and unpaved Law Rd north of Pamlico. About 1939, SC 51 was removed from S-21-731 at Salem. In 1960, SC 51 was rerouted at Hemingway to follow SC 41 south to the Rhems area, then southeast replacing S-22-17 (had been SC 502 decades prior) to US 701 closer to Georgetown. The old routing via Outland became SC 261 and S-22-4.
In 1978, SC 51 was extended to US 76 over S-21-27 (which decades earlier had been part of SC 514) plus new construction west of Cashua Dr. A small bit of SC 51 where it met US 52-301 became SC 51 CONN.
Improvements: SC 51 was paved from Florence to Pamlico in 1934. SC 51 was paved between Hemingway and Johnsonville in 1936. In 1938, SC 51 was paved from Pamlico to Salem and from Outland south 14 miles. SC 51 was fully paved in 1939. SC 51 was multilaned from Hemingway to Johnsonville by 1975. SC 51 was multilaned on the Second Loop Rd extension to US 76 when designated in 1978. SC 51 was multilaned from US 52-301 southeast to S-21-57 in 1997. Comment: SC 51 provides a fairly direct connection from Georgetown to Florence. |
