Creation: SC 246 appeared in 1929 as a renumbering of part of SC 24, running from SC 24 (now US 178) Friendship to SC 22 (now SC 34) ninety Six. This is the only SC 246.
| Adjustments: In 1939, SC 246 was extended north and west as new primary routing to end at US 25 Hodges.
In 1942, SC 246 was extended west replacing US 178 ALT to its current US 178 endpoint, then followed US 178 west for 3 miles before heading west as new primary routing to end at SC 20-185 outside Due West.
In 1947, SC 246 west was truncated to Hodges, leaving behind US 178 and S-24-31 and S-1-38 (part of this is now S-1-114).
Between 1974-76, SC 246 was removed from the "Old SC 246" loop just south of SC 702 and the "Old SC 246" loop just north of Ninety Six.
Improvements: SC 246 was fully paved in 1939 except a 4 mile stretch from US 25 eastward. This unpaved piece was paved in 1942. No multilane sections exist. Comment: SC 246 (combined with SC 39 and SC 702) make a decent bypass for US 178 traffic from Saluda to Anderson or Greenville. SC 246 also serves the small burgs of Cokesbury, Coronaca, and Saluca. I have a 1932 Texaco map that showed US 178 using SC 246 to Ninety Six but I believe that is in error. |
