Creation: Appeared in 1938 as a renumbering of part of SC 18 runing generally the way it does now. This is the 2nd SC 24.
|
Adjustments: Between 1941-51, SC 24 was removed from Old Port Rd/Abercrombie Rd in the Anderson Airport area. In 1961 or 1962, SC 24 was rerouted in the SC 187 area by following new SC 24-187 construction west across an arm of Lake Hartwell. The new western split of SC 24-187 is 0.6 miles north of the old location. Some of the old SC 24 survives as S-4-34 Whitehall Rd.
In 1962, SC 24's east end moved from Market and Main to Whitner and Main, coinciding with the elimination of SC 80. Webb St became S-4-513. In 1998 or 1999, SC 24 east was truncated to Murray St.
Improvements: SC 24 was fully paved upon designation. SC 24 was 4-laned from SC 28 to a little west of the SC 187 SB split in 2005. Comment: SC 24 is actually shorter from Westminster to Anderson than US 76 and passes through less towns and slowdowns. SC 24 (EB at SC 28 Byp) had the newest looking shield using the S. CAROLINA inside the square I'd ever seen in the late 1980s. | Previous SC 24's:

SC 24 #1: An original state route. Originally ran from SC 21 (now likely S-24-40 Kirksey St) Greenwood east through Ninety Six and Saluda before ending at SC 12 (now SC 23) Batesburg.
In 1923 or 1924, SC 24 west was truncated to SC 22 (now SC 34) Ninety Six, with the road to Greenwood becoming part of SC 22 (now SC 34, Old Ninety Six Hwy and Foundry Rd).
In 1925 or 1926, SC 24 east was extended as new primary routing through Steedman and Pelion to North, then south as more new primary routing through Neeses, Norway, and Denmark to end at SC 64 Olar. In 1929, SC 24 was rerouted at North to continue east replacing SC 6 to Orangeburg, then following SC 2 through Bowman and Harleyville before ending at US 78. The old routing south to Olar became part of SC 6 (now US 321).
Also in 1929, SC 24 west was rerouted away from Ninety Six (became SC 246) and instead replaced SC 55 to Greenwood, then followed US 25 to Hodges; replaced SC 25 to Hodges; followed SC 20 to Honea Path; replaced SC 15 through Anderson and Pendleton to Clemson; followed SC 2 through Seneca and Walhalla before entering Georgia above Mountain Rest.
Around 1932, SC 24 was removed from S-32-76 Samaria Hwy; S-32-19; and Steedman Rd in Lexington County. In 1933, SC 24 east was truncated to Anderson. The long route to US 78 became US 178. It is still US 178 except: SC 28 Bus through downtown Anderson; US 178 Bus through Greenwood (except SC 24 used Kirksey St); US 178 Bus through Orangeburg
In 1938, the remaining SC 24 from Anderson to Georgia via Walhalla became part of SC 28. It is still SC 28 except: SC 28 Bus through Pendleton; SC 93 through Clemson; S-37-1 over to Newry area; SC 130/59 throguh Seneca; S-37-3 throguh West Union. See scan for current SC 24 entry. |
