Creation: SC 283 appeared in 1939 as new primary routing, running from SC 28 Plum Branch east 6 miles. This is the only SC 283.
Adjustments: In 1940, SC 283 was extended east as new primary routing to US 25.
In 1947, SC 283 was downgraded to S-33-14, S-33-17 and S-19-19.
In 1949, SC 283 was returned to the primary system from Plum Branch to US 23.

When SC 283 came back, it was rebuilt in most of its McCormick County run. The old routing is S-33-14 Old Edgefield Rd; abandoned routing; S-33-202; abandoned routing over Stevens Creek. In eastern McCormick County the old routing is S-33-138 Key Rd, S-33-251, and abandoned routing over Wine Creek.

Improvements: SC 283 was fully paved upon redesignation in 1949; there are no multilane segments on SC 283.
Comment: SC 283 passes through a section of the Sumter National Forest.
