Creation: SC 290 appeared in 1936 or 1937 as new primary routing, running from US 29 (now SC 290-292 split) Duncan southeast 5 miles to the Fairmont Mills area. This is the only SC 290.
Adjustments: In 1939, SC 290 was extended east as new primary routing to US 221 Moore.
By 1942, SC 290 was placed on new alignment from Moore northwest to near today's SC 417. The original route used Saluda Rd/Gas Plant Rd/a bit of S-42-121/abandoned route over the creek/a bit of S-42-64/Monroe Rd.

About 1942, SC 290 was extended west replacing US 29 to end at US 29 west of Greer.

In 1949, SC 290 west was truncated to SC 101 Greer. The route out to US 29 west of Greer became SC 101.
In 1964, SC 290 was extended west with SC 101, then replaced SC 415 northwest to end at US 25.

In 2006 (bridge date), SC 290 was put on new construction to bypass Moore and meet US 221 closer to I-26. The old path through Moore is now S-42-86.
In the mid-2000s, SC 290 was put on a brief duplex with US 29 over to Buncombe Rd leaving behind S-23-298 O'Neal Rd.
Improvements: SC 290 was paved in 1942.
SC 290 was mutilaned from US 221 to SC 296 in 2006.
Comment: SC 290 serves the downtown area of Greer.
There is a fully posted SC 290 TRUCK since at least 2008 (GMSV) that uses SC 80 and US 29 to get around central Greer.
