Creation: SC 291 appeared in 1939 as new primary routing, running from US 276-SC 2 north to US 29 ALT (now S-23-21) near Paris. This is the only SC 291.
| Adjustments: In 1942, SC 291 was extended south and west as new primary routing all the way around Greenville to end at US 29 (now SC 20) below Gantt. In 1947, SC 291 was reduced to running from US 276 to US 29 east of Greenville. North of US 29 became S-23-24; US 276 southwest around to Gantt became S-23-30 (today this is S-23-218 Parkins Mill Rd, S-23-107 Mauldin Rd across I-85, S-23-30 Potomac/Jacobs Rds. which now dead ends near the I-85/US 25 interchange, S-23-226 Lenhardt Rd)
In 1953, SC 291 was extended south as new construction to US 25. In 1954 or 1955, SC 291 was extended further southwest on new construction to end at US 29 (now SC 20). In 1956, SC 291 north was extended over to US 25-276/SC 253 as new construction.
In mid-1957, all of SC 291 from Wade Hampton Blvd south and west all the way around Greenville was renumbered as US 29 (west of Augusta Rd is now I-85). In 1960, SC 291 was re-extended with US 29 all the way back around to today's I-185/US 29. In 1962, SC 291 south was truncated to US 25 Augusta Rd. West from there to I-185/US 29 became I-85. In 1998 or 1999, SC 291 south was rerouted at Mauldin Rd to use new construction to cross I-85 (with a new interchange) southwest to Augusta Rd, then replaced US 25 Bus south to US 25 Donaldson.
Improvements: SC 291 was paved north of US 276 in 1942. All other parts of SC 291 were paved beginning in 1948. SC 291 was mutilaned from US 276 north to US 29 in 1964. In 1966 or 1967, the remainder of SC 291 was multilaned. Comment: SC 291 (Pleasantburg Dr) is now all suburban except its recent extension south of I-85. |
