Creation: SC 453 appeared in 1942 as new primary routing, running from SC 31 (now US 176) Holly Hill north to SC 45 Eutawville.
Adjustments: In 1951, SC 453 south was extended to US 178 Harleyville, replacing S-38-83 and S-18-17 (had been part of SC 152), with some new construction sprinkled in.

Improvements: Fully paved at creation; no multilane sections.
Comment: SC 453 follows the railroad across the Four Holes Swamp, but only loosely parallels it everywhere else.
SC 453 has a posted TRUCK route for Holly Hill that utilizes S-38-68/171 (also US 176 TRUCK), a bit of US 176, SC 310, and SC 45.
