Previous SC 525's: SC 525: Appeared in 1937 or 1938 as new routing. Ran from US 52-78, SC 2 North Charleston east 2 miles to the Army Base/Port Authority Area.
In 1940, SC 525 was extended in both directions: west 1 mile to the Airport, and the east end was extended south to meet US 52-78 again at Charleston's northern boundary.
In 1941 or 1942, SC 525 was extended south to end at US 17-701 (current Meeting St. at Lee St.). This appears to have replaced US 52-78. This brought SC 525 to its longest length at 12 miles.
In 1948, SC 525 was downgraded to S-10-13 (Remount Rd), S-10-38 (Virginia Ave), S-10-62 (Montague Ave), S-10-32 (Spruill Ave), and was renumbered as part of US 52 on Meeting St.
SC 525 was multilaned on at least Spruill Ave in 1942, as it ran right by the Naval Base/Shipyard.

US 52 SB, SC 261: 0.9 - 21.5
US 52 NB: 0.6 - 22.1

US 76: 3.5 - 55.4
US 401: 7 - 62.4
SC 341: 3.6 - 66
Creation: Appeared in 1939 as new primary routing. Ran from US 521 (current SC 377) Kingstree southeast 10 miles.
Adjustments: In 1940, SC 527 was extended in both directions: east as new routing to SC 511 (current SC 41) Warsaw, and west over what had been SC 175 through Sardinia to SC 54 (current US 378) in eastern Sumter County.
In 1941 or 1942, SC 527 was extended west again to SC 341 Wisacky. From SC 54 to the Lee County Line was new primary routing, but from the county line north to SC 341 had been SC 347. This made SC 527 the same route it is right now.
In 1948, SC 527 was truncated to 2 pieces: SC 341 to SC 763 (current US 401) and SC 54 (current US 378) to US 52 Kingstree.
In 1949, SC 527 was restored to its previous endpoints, which it remains today.
Maps are unclear about when SC 527 was routed around downtown Kingstree. From personal experience I know it was that way in 1975.
Improvements: Paved only between Sardinia and SC 54 in 1940; In 1942, paved from SC 54 to Williamsburg County Line, and from SC 341 to SC 763; Fully paved on all primary sections in 1948
Multilane only in the immediate Kingstree area, since at least 1975.
Comment: SC 527 follows the Black River for most of its length.
