Creation: SC 544 appeared in 1942 as new primary routing, running from US 17 Murrells Inlet to US 501 (now SC 707) Socastee. This is the only SC 555.
| Adjustments: In 1947, SC 555 was downgraded to S-26-35. In 1949, SC 544 was returned to service from Murrells Inlet to Socastee, plus replaced US 501 north to Red Hill. In 1981, SC 544 south was rerouted at Socastee over a short newly constructed road plus replaced S-26-375 dowm to US 17 Business in Surfside Beach. The previous route to Murrells Inlet became part of SC 707.
Between 1988-96, the north end of SC 544 was shifted east to opposite French Collins Rd instead of opposite Depot Rd. The old approach became S-26-272 Washington Ave. In 1993, SC 544 was placed on a newly constructed bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in Socastee, plus replaced what what was left of S-26-375. In the process, SC 544 no longer intersects SC 707. The old road through Socastee became S-26-616.
Improvements: SC 544 was fully paved in 1949. SC 544 was multilaned on its 1993 bypass of Socastee. In 1998 or 1999, SC 544 was multilaned from US 17 Bus to US 17. In 2005, SC 544 was multilaned from Socastee to the US 501.SC 544 CONN. In 2007, SC 544 was multilaned from US 17 to the Socastee bypass. Comment: SC 544 is now part of a useful bypass of Myrtle Beach since SC 31 was extended to it. |
