US 29 ALT #1: Appeared in 1936 as a new route from US 29 to SC 18 (now SC 28) south of Anderson.
In 1940, US 29 ALT was extended east and north around Anderson back to US 29 as new primary routing plus an overlay with US 76-178.
In 1947, US 29 ALT was redesignated as US 29.

US 29 ALT #2: Appeared in 1937 as new construction from Greenville to nearly Taylors. This was shown but not labeled on SC Officials.
In 1939, US 29 ALT became US 29 in a route swap.
US 29 ALT #3: Appeared in 1939 as a renumbering of US 29 from Greenville through Minturn and Taylors.
In 1947, US 29 ALT was downgraded to S-23-3 Main St; S-23-21 Rutherford Rd; a brief bit of US 29; S-23-38 to Taylors; S-23-37 (now also S-23-38) Taylors back over to US 29.

US 29 ALT #4: Appeared by 1940 in the Fairforest area west of Spartanburg. This had been SC 8's original routing up to the mid 1920s.
It appears US 29 ALT was downgraded to S-42-317 when US 29 became US 29 ALT from Lyman to North Carolina.
US 29 ALT was sorta shown on the 1947 Spartanburg County map.
US 29 ALT #5: Appeared by 1940 as a renumbering of US 29 in the Wellford area east of Lyman.
It appears US 29 ALT was downgraded to S-42-318 when US 29 became US 29 ALT from Lyman to North Carolina.
US 29 ALT was sorta shown on the 1947 Spartanburg County map.

US 29 ALT #6: Appeared by 1940 running on Magnolia St to Wofford/St Johns St in Spartanburg as a bypass of Main St.
This likely was rechristened as a US 29 CONN route of some sort when US 29 became US 29 ALT from Lyman to North Carolina.
Today it is mainline US 29 except for Magnolia St. US 29 ALT here was mentioned explicitly in the 1949 SCDOT Annual Report.
US 29 ALT #7: Appeared in 1954 as a renumbering of US 29 from Lyman through Spartanburg, Gaffney, and Blacksburg to meet back up with US 29 at the North Carolina State Line.
US 29 ALT went back to being US 29 in 1962.
