Creation: Appeared in 1930, replacing SC 16 from US 21 (now S-12-275) Chester north through York and Clover into North Carolina.
|
Adjustments: In 1949, US 321 was rerouted at Lowrys to head due south to Chester. This had been SC 325 prior to 1947. The old way from Lowrys to Chester became S-12-1, although some of it is now part of SC 909. In 1950, US 321 was substantially extended south, all the way to Hardeeville. This replaced: US 21 from Chester to Winnsboro; SC 218 from Winnsboro to Columbia; multiplex with US 21 from northern Columbia to Dixiana; replaced SC 5 from Dixiana all the way to Hardeeville.
Originally, US 321 in Columbia followed Main St to Elmwood, then west to Assembly, south to Gervais, and followed US 1 west across the Saluda River (this was a 6-plex of routes: US 1-21-176-321-378 and SC 215). US 321 followed US 1 to Charleston Hwy (SC 602's beginning) before heading south towards Dixiana. In 1952, US 321 was placed on a new bypass west of Winnsboro, leaving behind US 321 Business.
In 1954 or 1955, US 321 was rerouted in Columbia to continue south on Assembly to Blossom St before heading west across the Saluda River on the current US 321 bridge. The old route remained US 1-378 and SC 602, with a piece of Charleston Hwy becoming a US 1-21 connector. In 1962, US 321 was added to the Chester Bypass with SC 9, plus a little new construction northwest of town, leaving behind US 321 Business.
In 1963, US 321 was removed from S-46-4 north of Clover.
In 1964, US 321 was placed on new alignment to bypass Blackstock, leaving behind S-20-130 and S-12-130 (a rare instance of county numbers staying the same across a boundary)
Between 1964-67, US 321 was placed on its York Bypass, replacing US 321 ALT. The old route through York became US 321 Business.
About 1974, US 321 was extended south to I-95 as a multiplex with US 17. In 1978, US 321 was removed from Assembly St in Columbia and rerouted along Huger St like today. Assembly St became an extended SC 48.
It appears that at some point in recent years, US 321 south was truncated back to where it meets US 17 in Hardeeville. All the postings on I-95 ramps have TO markers, and US 321 is no longer posted on US 17 itself anywhere. Improvements: Paved only in York County upon designation. The remainder of US 321 was paved in 1937. The first multilane section of US 321 was in place in 1950, with its US 1 multiplex. In 1963, US 321 was 4-lane from Clover to the N.C. Line; Columbia down to Dixiana (US 21-176-321 split) In 1964, US 321 was multilaned from Chester to the SC 97 SB split; most of southern Chester County; In 1965, US 321 was 4-laned from York north to the SC 161 split. In 1967, US 321 was 4-laned from the US 21 NB split to I-20. In 1968 or 1969, US 321 was 4-laned from Woodward down to near Winnsboro In 1970, US 321 was 4-laned from on the US 301 multiplex near Ulmer. In 1971, most of the Winnsboro Bypass was 4-laned. In 1974, US 321 was 4-laned from Gaston to Dixiana. In 1975, US 321 was multilaned from Gaston to Swansea. In 1977, US 321 was multilaned on the SC-9 portion of the Chester Bypass In 1979, US 321 was 4-laned a couple miles north of I-20. In 1990, US 321 was 4-laned from Clover to SC 161. In 2006, US 321 was multilaned from Neeses to North Comment: US 321 essentially slices South Carolina in half. US 321 could be a viable alternative to go from Columbia to Savannah if you don't mind a few towns. |
