US 78 ALT #1: Appeared by 1940 as a new route running parallel to US 78 in Williston, using Main St between its connections to US 78 via Powell St. and State St.
In 1947, US 78 ALT was downgraded to S-6-33.
US 78 ALT #2: Appeared in 1948 or 1949 as new primary routing, running from US 1-78 Aiken east along Richland Ave to US 78/SC 215 (now S-2-3).
By 1952, US 78 ALT became mainline US 78.
Not shown on a map I have seen but is explicitly named in the 1949 SCDOT Annual Report.
