Creation: Appeared in 1923 as an original state highway, running from TN 10 Shelbyville via Tullahoma and Winchester to end at TN 2 Monteagle.
| Adjustments: In 1932, TN 16 east was truncated to TN 15 Winchester. The route to Monteagle became TN 15. Today this is US 41 ALT except Old Cowan Rd out of Winchester; Old Mill Rd; Diamond Dr/Williams Cove Rd/Money Ln; Maple St/University Ave/Missouri Ave in Sewanee; Airport Rd/Midway Rd/abandoned routing Also in 1932, TN 16 was extended northwest as new state highway to end at TN 99 (now TN 269) Eagleville. About 1937, TN 16 was removed from Old Unionville Rd near Elbethel; Hickory Hill Church Rd at hickory Hill; Clardy Rd and Crowell Rd/Halls Mill Rd in Unionville; Old Rover Rd through Rover In 1941 or 1942, TN 16 was extended northwest as new routing to TN 11 Kirkland. About 1943, TN 16 was given its current routing from Winchester to Shelbyville. Most of the old route eventually became TN 130 (still is except: Lees Ford Lane east of Elk River. Most of the abandoned west side is underwater; at Boiling Fork Cr, about half the old routing is underwater and the west side is covered by the park there now; In Tullahoma, TN 16 used Lincoln St to Westside Dr; Holland St/Depot street through downtown Shelbyville) In 1944, US 41 ALT was assigned to the entirety of TN 16. Between 1979-81, TN 16 was extended with US 64 west out of Winchester, then south to Alabama as new state highway.
