 Creation: Appeared in 1933 or 1934 as new state highway, running from TN 100 Bon Aqua Junction to US 70 (now TN 47) Colesburg. This is the 2nd TN 46.
Adjustments: In 1941 or 1942, TN 46 north was extended replacing US 70 to end at the new US 70 alignment (now College St) in Dickson.
In 1965, TN 46 was removed from Old Columbia Rd into Colesburg leaving behind Old Columbia Rd and an extended TN 47 back to Dickson.
Also in 1965, TN 46 was removed from Old Hwy 46 just south of I-40 and the much lengthier Old Hwy 46 through Bon Aqua to Bon Aqua Junction.
In 1983, TN 46 north was extended to US 70 Bypass, then follwed US 70 west past Dickson, then headed north to TN 49 as new routing, then followed TN 49 west before heading north as new routing through Cumberland City to end at US 79 east of Legate.
Also in 1983, TN 46 south was extended east with TN 100 into Williamson County, then east as new state highway to end at US 431 near Bethlehem.
