US 23E: Officially requested by Kentucky in September 1929 to run from Jenkins KY to Asheville NC via Johnson City.
Tennessee was fine with this corridor, the entirety of TN 36, but petitioned AASHO for this to be US 23 instead. In April 1930, AASHO designated this as US 23. |
