Creation: Officially approved as a new US route in June 1929 (after calling out Tennessee for unilaterally enacting its existence) as a renumbering of US 45 (also an addition to the full length of TN 43) from Three Way north of Jackson north via Milan and Martin to end at the Kentucky State line at Fulton KY. Literally feet inside Kentucky US 45E met back up with US 45 and US 45W.
Adjustments: Between 1957-60, US 45E was changed to use 1st St all the way through Milan. Previously it used Highland/College/Main/New St
About 1979, US 45E was placed on a new bypass around the west of Martin. The route through Martin using Elm St/University St and Lindell St became TN 43 Spur (now US 45E Bus and US 45E) In 1989 (AASHO), US 45E was rerouted in South Fulton to bypass around the west to its current endpoint with US 45W-51. This was a replacement for US 45 Byp. The old surface route into Kentucky remains TN 43.
Between 1990-92, US 45E was removed from Main St through Medina. In 1992, US 45E was removed from Three Way Lane at the US 45E-W split in Three Way and put on the new interchange alignments in the area, changing the location of the south endpoint. About 1994, US 45E was removed from Vick Rd south of Bradford and Milan Hwy/Greenfield Hwy through Bradford. About 1995, US 45E was removed from Highway Ave through Sharon. In 1995 or 1996, US 45E was removed from the bypass around the west of Martin and placed on new bypass around the east of Martin. The west bypass remained TN 43 (now is TN 216, partly unnumbered and TN 43 north of TN 22).
Posting: Fully posted Secret TN Route Overlay: TN 43 (49.5 mi) TN 372 (2.0 mi) TN 43 (6.1 mi) TN 215 (1.8 mi) Comment: US 45E is several miles shorter and has way more multilaning than US 45W. |
